FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About Chiropractic
What do Doctors of Chiropractic do?
Chiropractors start the patient-care process with a detailed history-taking and physical examination. Your case history is vital as it provides a background about your health. This can include details about what brought you into the office , identifying any possible causative factors in your day to day life, and discussing anything else in your health history that may help us to help you!
A thorough physical examination is then performed, to look at the function of your muscles, joints and nervous system. Your exam can include range of motion testing, orthopedic tests, muscle and joint palpation, computerized nervous system scans, etc.
After your history-taking and physical exam are completed, your chiropractor will review your findings. If there is any reason your chiropractor feels you would not benefit from care, the will let you know. This would include cases where a referral to a different type of health-care provider is indicated. Otherwise, your chiropractor will share your findings with you and make recommendations for a care-plan. Progress exam visit are done periodically during care-plans, so that your chiropractor can measure the results of your care.
What Type of Education do Doctors of Chiropractic receive?
Today’s Doctor of Chiropractic is well educated. The science of chiropractic requires a special emphasis on anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology, bio mechanics, x-ray, spinal adjusting techniques and related subjects. This demanding curriculum prepares chiropractors to care for their patients and to identify when a referral may be needed.
Before beginning Chiropractic college, chiropractic students in Canada need to complete a minimum of 3 years of undergraduate university education to obtain the necessary prerequisites. Our doctors both graduated with 4-year university degrees before applying to chiropractic college. A chiropractic student then completes 4 years of graduate school to receive a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. However the testing is not done. Each candidate must then pass both Federal and Provincial board examinations in order to receive a license to practice chiropractic. It takes about 8 years of post-secondary schooling to learn how to be a chiropractor.
A chiropractic education never ends. Chiropractors continue to educate themselves by taking postgraduate courses and staying current by reading the latest scientific research. These ongoing continuing education hours are mandated by our governing college in Ontario.
Is Chiropractic Care Safe ?
There are literally thousands of published scientific studies proving chiropractic’s safety and effectiveness. In the words of the New Zealand government’s inquiry, chiropractic care is ‘remarkably safe.’
Chiropractic has an excellent safety record. It is the result of a conservative approach to health that avoids invasive procedures whenever possible.
Chiropractic care is a natural approach to better health that is proven safe and effective.
What Can I do to Help My Healing ?
There’s a lot you can do to give yourself the best chance for a quick recovery. Your chiropractor will help you identify causative stresses (physcial, mental, chemical) in your life, so that you can limit them wherever possible.
We can help you to learn proper sitting and lifting methods. Specific exercises may be suggested to help retrain the muscles that support the spine.
Proper rest is an important aspect of the healing process, too. Get the appropriate amount of rest your body needs to allow optimal healing.
During the healing process, proper nutrition is more important than ever. Make sure you eat balanced meals and adequate hydration.
Perhaps most important of all, keep your appointments and follow your chiropractic doctor’s recommendations for optimum results.
Proper rest, exercise, and good nutrition are especially important during the healing process.
Do Children Need Chiropractic Care ?
Stresses to the spine and nervous system can occur as early as during the birth process itself. For this reason, many parents choose to start having their child checked when they are infants.
Later, learning to walk, riding a bicycle, school-yard falls, sports and other childhood activities can cause stress and to the spine. While a bandage and some comforting words can help a skinned knee, addressing dysfunction in a child’s spine is the unique domain of a chiropractic doctor.
Many childhood health complaints that are brushed off as ‘growing pains’ can often be traced to neuro-musculoskeletal challenges. Oftentimes, dysfunction actually builds-up for a long time without any symptoms at all. Regular chiropractic check-ups can identify these problems and help avoid complaints seen later in adults.
Naturally, chiropractic adjusting procedures are very gentle and are modified to a child’s spine. Most parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and are healthier with our care.
Chiropractors can also help screen for scoliosis and other childhood health problems related to the spine.
Can I Be Too Old For Chiropractic ?
More and more people are consulting chiropractors, especially in their later years. With people living longer lives statistically, safe and natural chiropractic care is growing in popularity.
Restoring better spinal function can help improve mobility, vitality, endurance. Many patients report improvement with arthritic symptoms and other chronic ailments often associated with the aging process.
The adjusting technique used by your doctor will be modified for maximum comfort, safety and results.
Regardless of your age, chiropractic care can help improve mobility and improve quality of life.
How Long Will I Need Chiropractic Care ?
That depends on your goals!
Some people seek chiropractic care only for relief during a short-term crisis. Other people want our help to transition towards more proactive, lifestyle-based care.
Most patients do find that periodic chiropractic check-ups help keep them in tip-top shape. Those who are active, have stressful jobs, or want to be their very best, find that a schedule of preventive visits is helpful in the maintenance of good health. Periodic chiropractic check-ups can be a valuable part of a healthy lifestyle, just like brushing and flossing your teeth, getting regular exercise, and eating a balanced diet.
How long you decide to benefit from chiropractic care is always up to you.
We are here for you, whether your goal is relief through a short-term block of crisis-care, or starting chiropractic lifestyle-care as part of your ongoing proactive routine.
Is Chiropractic Care covered by Insurance?
Most private insurance plans provide some coverage for chiropractic services and custom orthotics. Our patients do pay the clinic directly and are provided with a detailed receipt to submit to any insurance they may have. Most insurance companies now offer an online app so that receipts can be submitted in seconds. We welcome your questions so we can help you with your insurance needs.
